Reflection
"Sunrise for a Doula," Pastels on Watercolor Paper by Kathryn S. Ramirez
Connection
The pastel above represents a morning when the elation of a beautiful birth filled me to overflowing after a long night. I created the primitive piece during a course I taught called "The Pregnancy Journey." During my observation phase I worked mainly with hospital based clients and had only two out of hospital experiences one of which became an emergency transfer to the hospital and eventually to an operating room where I observed my first cesarean. The reflection on the experience of driving home after the first home birth I witnessed was electrifying. When I began on the journey to becoming a midwife I started with a doula training course. I had never been exposed to home birth before. I had only dreamed of how beautiful it would be. It was more than I ever imagined. Reflecting on that experience while completing the Childbirth Education course gave me the foundation for the topics I ultimately decided to cover in my syllabus. I truly relished in the self-evaluation paper I did for my observation. This course (Childbirth Education) and my experiences as a doula during my observation phase solidified my commitment to education women of all ages about the beauty and divinity of the female body. I continue to reflect upon this time and time again in each and every course I take. I will never finish my education for I truly believe that every day we have an opportunity to learn something new and we, midwives, have a unique opportunity to learn most from the women in our care and the experiences we are invited to witness.
