Interpretation of Epidemiologic Literature
March 13, 2016
This course required a research report showing the relationship between diet and pregnancy induced hypertension. Included are the steps followed when searching for relevant publications and the considerations needed to make at each step. Five articles considered to be reliable and the reason why they were selected along with the student's experiences going through the process of research were required elements. Finally one of the articles was analyzed following the steps in the evaluation of an epidemiological study included in our course textbook. The analysis was to be shown in table format and appended to the report.
Reflection
Before taking the Epidemiology course I would have not considered the subject matter important to midwifery care. I can understand now how wrong I would have been if I had considered it at all. I wished I had taken this course much earlier in my major map than I did. I would have used the research skills and interpretation lessons to evaluate the materials I used much more thoroughly to create the many practice guidelines and client handouts over my many hours of studies. With the education provided by this course I plan to review all of my documents and evaluate the references based upon the skills gained in Epidemiology.
